SECONDARY 5 MATH SYLLABUS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
In Secondary 5 your child will be able to:
Sketch quadratic function graphs and identify key features.
Solve quadratic equations using different methods.
Solve problems involving ratios of areas/volumes of similar figures.
- Apply vector notation and calculate vector magnitude.
SECONDARY 5 Mathematics Syllabus
Algebra
– Sketch quadratic function graphs (e.g., y=(x–p)2+qy = (x – p)^2 + qy=(x–p)2+q)
– interpret their key features (vertex, axis of symmetry, etc.).
Algebra
– Sketch and analyse quadratic functions; solve simultaneous linear and non-linear equations.
Geometry and Measurement (Congruence and Similarity)
– Solve problems involving ratios of areas and volumes of similar 2D and 3D figures.
Geometry and Measurement (Vectors)
– Understand and apply vector notation.
– Represent and perform operations on directed line segments, translations, and position vectors.
– Calculate the magnitude of vectors.
Common Struggles Faced by secondary 5 Students in Maths
- Maths anxiety causes avoidance and poor attainment.
- Recognising key ideas and applying problem solving skills is difficult.
- Difficult with basic maths and inconsistent practice.
- Some students find it difficult to connect ideas and maths language.
- Poor understanding and note taking, poor revision skills.
