PRIMARY 2 MATH SYLLABUS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
In Primary 2, your child will be able to:
- Understand the value of numbers by reading and writing numbers up to 1000 and comparing them.
- Identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes by their features.
- Measure and compare the length, mass and capacity of objects and read time to the nearest minute.
- Solve simple problems that require addition and subtraction in real-life situations.
- Use words, pictures and drawings to explain mathematical ideas.
Primary 2 Mathematics Syllabus
Number & Algebra
– Counting, place value, comparing, ordering, odd/even numbers, and fractions (unit and like fractions up to 12).
Addition and Subtraction
– Adding and subtracting up to 3-digit numbers, including mental math.
Multiplication and Division
– Mastering times tables for 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10.
Money
– Working with dollars, cents, and decimal notation.
Measurement (Length, Mass, Volume)
– Measuring length (m), mass (kg/g), volume (liters), and comparing units.
Measurement (Time)
– Telling time to the minute and converting between hours and minutes.
Geometry
– Identifying 2D shapes and patterns, and recognizing 3D shapes like cubes and spheres.
Statistics
– Reading and interpreting picture graphs.
Common Struggles Faced by Primary 2 Students in Maths
Do not understand the value of digits in a number if they are in different places.
Have trouble translating word sentences into math equations (e.g. 5 + 3 = 8).
Have trouble staying focused in math class.
