PRIMARY 5 MATH SYLLABUS

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In Primary 5 (Standard), your child will be able to:

  • Work with whole numbers up to 10 million, using brackets and order of operations.
  • Perform fraction and decimal operations.
  • Calculate percentages (parts, discounts, GST) and solve rate problems.
  • Calculate area of triangles and volume of cubes/cuboids.
  • Study angles, triangle properties, and shapes like parallelograms and trapeziums.

In Primary 5 (Foundation), your child will be able to:

  • Compare, round, and perform operations on whole numbers and fractions.
  • Solve decimal and rate problems.
  • Understand time and calculate area, perimeter, and volume.
  • Study lines, angles, and shapes like rectangles and squares.
  • Interpret tables, bar graphs, and line graphs.

Primary 5 (STandard) Mathematics Syllabus

Number and Algebra

Work with whole numbers up to 10 million and perform operations (including brackets and order of operations).

– Handle fractions: division and operations with mixed numbers.

– Use decimals for all operations and conversions.

Percentage

– Find parts, discounts, GST, interest, and express numbers as percentages.

Rate

– Calculate rate, total amounts, or units.

Measurement (Area)

– Calculate the area of triangles using the formula 1/2 × base × height.

Measurement (Volume)

– Find the volume of cubes and cuboids (length × width × height).

– Calculate liquid volume and convert between units.

Geometry

– Study angles (straight line, point, vertically opposite) and properties of triangles (e.g., isosceles), parallelograms, rhombuses, and trapeziums.

Primary 5 (Foundation) Mathematics Syllabus

Number and Algebra

– Work with whole numbers up to 10 million: comparing, rounding, and operations (factors/multiples).

– Handle fractions: equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, and operations.

– Use decimals (up to 3 decimal places) and perform operations.

Rate

– Calculate rate, total amounts, or units.

Measurement (Time)

– Understand hours/minutes, the 24-hour clock, and calculating start/end times.

Measurement
(Area & Perimeter)

– Calculate area and perimeter of rectangles, squares, and composite figures.

Measurement (Volume)

– Understand volume of cubes and cuboids.

– Use isometric grids for drawing.

Geometry

– Study properties of lines and angles (perpendicular/parallel) and shapes like rectangles and squares.

Statistics

– Read, interpret, and complete tables, bar graphs, and line graphs.

Common Struggles Faced by Primary 5 Students in Maths

  1. More complex word problems that require applying multiple mathematical concepts at once.
  2. Perform calculations but struggle with understanding the core principles behind the math.
  3. Visualizing shapes, areas, and angles can be difficult, especially with complex figures.
