PRIMARY 1 MATH SYLLABUS

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In Primary 1, your child will be able to:

  • Understand number value and relationships.
  • Distinguish and describe shapes and their properties.
  • Measure and compare lengths and time.
  • Apply critical thinking to solve simple problems involving basic math operations.
  • Express and explain mathematical ideas using words and visual representation.

Primary 1 Mathematics Syllabus

Numbers and Counting

– Counting on and back from any given number within 100.

– Understanding place value, number patterns and ordinal numbers.

– Ordering and comparing numbers within 100.

Addition and Subtraction

– Concepts of addition and subtraction

– Add and subtract 2-digit numbers and 1-digit numbers, including using mental strategies.

Multiplication and Division

Money

– Counting cents up to $1 and dollars up to $100.

Shapes and Geometry

– Identifying and naming simple 2D shapes (square, circle, triangle).

– Describing properties of simple 2D shapes (number of sides, number of corners), identifying simple symmetrical shapes.

Measurement (Length)

Measuring length in cm and comparing lengths.

Ordering objects from shortest to longest or vice versa.

Measurement (Time)

– Reading time in 5-minute intervals, am/pm, duration of time.

– Developing an understanding of duration (e.g., how long something takes).

Statistics

– Picture Graphs: Reading and interpreting data.

Common Struggles Faced by Primary 1 Students in Maths

  1. The ideas are too “abstract” for P1s to understand.
  2. Word problems are difficult due to poor reading skills.
  3. Difficult picking the right operation (e.g. add or subtract).
  4. Multi-step problems are difficult to follow.
  5. Basic arithmetic is slow due to lack of fluency and practice.
  6. Maths anxiety / lack of confidence.
