John wants to buy some packets of sweets at $5 for each packet. For every 8 packets of sweets he buys, he can get one packet of sweets for free.

a) How much money will he spend on 10 packets of sweets?

b) How many packets of sweets can he buy with $23?

Solution:

a) Buy 8 Free 1 (Total 9 packets) -> 5 x 8 = 40

10 – 9 = 1 (Need 1 more packet)

$40 + $5 = $45

He will spend $45 on 10 packets of sweets.

b) $23 ÷ $5 = 4 R $3

He can only buy 4 packets of sweets with $23.
